Itacare is a city of Bahia in Brazil, south of Salvador. It is located 70 km north of Ilheus, where the Rio de Contas, which comes from the Chapada Diamantina, meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The city of Itacare has an estimated population of 9 000 inhabitants and was founded as a Portuguese colonial settlement, originally named São Jorge dos Ilheus, in 1532.

The city was a meeting of Dutch and Portuguese pirates while later and over time became a center dedicated to the cultivation of cocoa and a whaling port.
Late in the decade of 80 and after a heavy plague that devastated cocoa farms in the region, Itacaré was becoming a major tourist destination, especially for surfers.
Itacare is on the verge of a national park, with large tracts of forest.

Itacaré remains one of the most important centers of culture Bahia. Many tourists visit Itacaré to discover and becoming part of the Capoeira circles and of course enjoy the traditional food of Brazil.
